So basically, I'm mad because my computer lags ON SIMPLE TASKS, but its fine when doing anything else. There is an over 30 second delay when typing on microsoft word, notepad, or even renaming things, and navigating with windows explorer also lags...

But there's more.

Black ops works fine. I have 4GB RAM and a new nvidia processor. I have over 200 free gigs on my harddrive... Is there something wrong with my computer?

If you put a million monkeys at a million keyboards, one of them will eventually write a Java program.
The rest of them will write Perl programs.

I have noticed that on a brand new pc with windows 7, i still have xp on my pc, and simple tasks just do so much faster.

Ctrl alt delete -> Task Manager -> Performance

Check if anything is at maximum usage.

Chances are that your CPU is one of those multicore thingies running a single threaded program (which simple things usually do), which only makes use of one core and wastes the others. It shouldn't be that bad unless your single cores are very slow. Or it could be that you have a lot of memory but poor memory bandwidth.. check if you're opening a browser, music player, video player, webcam while doing those things.

Or you're running all that on Windows XP or something, which is very ineffective with larger file sizes and RAM. Or that the hard drive is fragmented.

^lol

nvidia processor? lol. You're probably running an Intel processor.

To me it sounds like you are using a laptop. . . are you?

Go to the start menu and in the search box type in msconfig. Click on the services tab and check hide all microsoft services.

Now take a screenshot of all the services. Click the startup tab and screenshot all the stuff in there.

Upload all of the screenshots to imgur.com and post them here so I can see.

Also . . . how old/new is this computer?

Well . . .if you're using a laptop it most likely stemmed from some sort of hotkey software that came on the computer (or possibly with your keyboard if you're using a wireless keyboard and it came with a disc - I can only guess at this.)

They (hotkey software) are known to cause key-delay problems from time to time

Preinstalled crappy software can also be a culprit. I was an intern in a business school once, and I had to uninstall a suite of CD burning software from a company called Roxio on all of the schools computers because it added 5-10 min. to the boot time of the PC (they were duo cores back when that was the newest thing).

the first thing you should do with a new computer is format the harddrive and reinstall the OS vanilla. No stupid added software, or anything. do all the updates. then clean and defrag the drive. to decrease boot time, open up msconfig and disable pretty much everything in startup and everything NOT OS related in tools. theres a plethora of other options you can tinker with but i wouldnt recommend it if you dont know what youre doing. do all that and its good to go. keep your pc clean and make sure no programs are running that dont need to be, on a regular basis.

This should be the golden rule.

Or rather, the golden rule should be that companies are not allowed to install crapware.
