RPG Game Making Competition, starts 1st of May until 1st of August
Link to Competition
Hi! We here at 64digits.com are hosting an RPG theme game making competition, cunningly called RPG Four Digits.
...that might sound like a fairly random name, but it is the latest in a series of competitions with more fortunate names (eg Scary Four Digits for halloween, Sixty Fools Digits for April Fools). To make things even more confusing, 64digits is building an RPG into the site called 64RPG. But let's not get into that...
The competition is three months long, to fully do the theme justice (we usually do month-long ones, a bit like another game contest you may have heard of). There are prizes, which are subject to further donations/sponsorships, so do check back if you think the reward is unsubstantial. And don't worry, everything is completely non-profit on our end. We just like games. A lot.
sounds cool, Problem i see though is if you try and make an RPG with MMF2 or Gamemaker you will loose instantly to anyone making an RPG with RPG maker. For that reason i sadly wont be entering
Just to be clear - it only needs to "have RPG elements", so SRPGs (eg. "Final Fantasy Tactics" / "Fire Emblem"), Rogue-likes, etc would be acceptable?
Like Windybeard says, I think MMF2 users would be at too much of a disadvantage if they had to make a traditional RPG.
btw: Toast hasn't mentioned it here, but you must register to enter before the competition starts (May 1st) - so even if you haven't made up your mind about entering, you still need to sign up in the next couple of days, just in case.
Any kind RPGs are acceptable yes. In fact my entry to the comp (just for fun) is going to be an SRPG.
Personally I reject the idea that any game creation program or programming language will be at a disadvantage. There are some people who are coding from scratch!
I've never used RPG maker before, but isn't it already a defined framework? Does it come with a level editor, scripting routines, dialogue systems, etc.? Or does it let you make a platform game/point and click game if you so want?
MMF isn't really a framework of anything, which is why I agree that it'd be at a disadvantage in a competition such as this.
The tools and engines users use to make their game will have to be credited when they submit their games. This means that when you vote and/or when the judge's judge which game is best, you can factor this information into your decision. Hence you won't be at a disadvantage.
Like I said, MMF can't be any worse than coding from scratch, which some people are doing.
IF anything I would think that MMF users would have an advantage, not a disadvantage. Development time might be slightly slower, but you're straying from the cookie-cutter looking bs that is RPG Maker.
If there's one thing I hate seeing these days, it's products that all look/feel the same. If I were a judge for this competition, I'd most likely be impressed with the original "feel" of an MMF RPG, over the standard RPG Maker entries.
