Greetings. I have an issue I was wondering about; how do you feel like having look alikes of popular characters in your games? I am not talking about ripping or editing a sprite and pasting it in your game. Nor do I mean fan games, in which person aims to make said character.

What I mean is making a character that is meant to look close to a popular character but naming it something else. For example, I just learned how to pixel female overalls and if I throw on the 'M. Bison' style hat I made, and use the correct colors, I could make a female Mario quite easily. But the question is should I?

When you see look alikes in games, what is your gut reaction? "Hey cool, that looks ike Ryu from street fighter!" or "How lame, they totally copied off Ryu from SF2."

Please give your opinion, thank you.

Personally, I usually see no problem with it. It's most enjoyable and less of a problem, in my opinion, when it's done for a humorous effect. Plus, you'll have the added bonus of using the "parody" defense if you're ever facing a cease-and-decist request.

Some people do this intentionally to act as references. Personally, I dislike it. Not because I think it's wrong, just I'd rather people come up with original ideas. I like to see new stuff. There have been times when I've liked the reference.

But yeah, your example actually sounds like an interesting combo (M. Bison + female Mario..?!) so go for it.

I think it really depends on how it's done. If it's obvious somehow that it's a reference and it's done well then I don't mind. Usually, when I notice these kinds of things, they're done with humor. I actually don't think it would work well without.

This scene comes to mind:
