One type of enemy I have been meaning to add for a long time is mutant spiders. When I played system shock 2 I almost jumped out of my skin the first time I saw a spider... not because I am afraid of spiders but just because it was something so alien yet familiar.
I have now implemented this enemy into the game, and it is working pretty nicely. I wanted to capture the feel of what a spider is, rather than just making it just another enemy that chases you and hits you; but looks like a spider. So I studied videos and articles about spiders and considered which would be the most practical aspects of their nature to implement into a game.
The end result is that the spiders themselves are not necasarily the main enemy, it is the environment they create around themselves. There is one level which focusses almost exclusively on spiders. There are cobwebs everywhere which the player must be careful not to disturb, else the spiders will feel the vibrations and come rapelling in from the ceiling on strings of silk. When the spiders are in pursuit of the player, the larger ones shoot webbing at the player which attaches him to the floor, restricting his ability to move until he can struggle free.
The spiders range in size from harmless and tiny (can be trodden on!) to large, and there is also an enormous boss spider which I am very proud of and I think people will have a lot of fun figuring out how to kill it!
