I *knew* that sewer grate was going to be important when I saw it in the original town picture (partly cos I didn't think they'd been invented in medieval times). Coincidentally, I was just reading about people stealing drain covers for scrap metal. I know it's old news, but I hadn't heard it and the numbers are crazy - 240,000 in beijing; 10,000 in calcutta, 2500 in philadelphia...
