A fairly (imho) simple item system (pick up an item, or more, and they're displayed in a series of boxes in the corner (or wherever you like).

The events have been commented, so it should be possible to figure out what's going on.

On a real RPG, it would be more practical to set it up so it'll only show the items if you press a "view items" button. For a simpler RPG though, this could work well.
