In lots of games made with other programs, you press pause and find a menu flashes up on the screen - but the background of the game is still visible.
It's a simple effect to achieve, so I'm surprised I've not seen it used more in MMF games.
So here's a simple demonstration of how to do it.
It doesn't contain many examples of the potential effects you can pull off, but frankly it shouldn't need to. It's kind of obvious what you can use it for. I personally like to use fade effects with it, or have a simtransparent box appear over the screen so it looks like a the screen has simply darkened a little and the menu has appeared.
