Capture pad and HL2 can't share direct draw and Windows Media Encoder fights with HL2 for processing space, what can I use to capture ingame footage of HL2?
Steve Zissou: Anne-Marie, do all the interns get Glocks?
I got fraps, i use it to see the frames per second in some games.
i dont remember there being a time limit but there is a fps limit max of 30 when capturing. but since movie files are 25 to 30 fps anyway it seems reasonable to me.
the only problem is that files are raw files so they're massive. You will need to encode it afterwards.
I didn't like FRAPS, couldn't get it to do much, I use Snagit instead. As long as you don't encode on the fly, in other words you need to output to a raw AVI file, then the slowdown isn't too massive.
Fraps doesn't slow down your games like Snagit does. I used Fraps, no frame drops. Then I used SnagIt, man it was completely unplayable. Also, Fraps had a better quality.
Andy, there's usually a FPS command/cheat built into most 3D games

I used to try out FRAPS too ... but it slows down the game pretty much when activated as the video is not compressed much, which means it takes a lot of bandwidth to write to disk. It is also a bit expensive if you do not plan to record a lot.
That is why I tried GameCam www.planetgamecam.com which I feel is better. The free version has its limitations, you cannot record sound, but you can record unlimited time, and since the video is compressed more, it does not slow the game down as much as FRAPS do.
I don't lose (m)any FPS Compressing a video takes longer than just writing it uncompressed, that's why FRAPS doesn't do it. Just get the MPEG encoder linked to from the FRAPS site, it shrinks the files a hell of a lot.
