I always thought that puzzle games were hard to code, and a bitch to score right. I now think I'm wrong, having created a puzzle game engine in a few hours (6 of off and on, probably an hour of actual coding). I had some minor problems during development, but I'd have to say it was probably one of the easiest things I've ever coded (besides my noob games of course). What's everyone else here think?

Hmm...well, the only puzzle game I attempted in years was more or less a 'Puchicarat' rip-off. Think Bust A Move 2/Snood, but with a bat and ball replacing the launcher. Some parts of the game (such as making blocks de-attached from above fall) were pretty damn difficult. Having to get the positioning exactly right for the blocks can also be a trial-and-error process.
It depends on exactly what kind of puzzler you're creating. So long as you don't try to emulate the more fancy block-based ones (i.e. Columns, Puyo-Puyo), you should be ok =P.

Absolutely right, clwe. Getting Emulsion right was a PITA (block based, and stuff moved around almost constantly). It's a good thing there's the Advanced Game Board object now...

Puzzle games themselfs arent hard to make, the challenge is thinking up an original idea that would be liked.

the only puzzle game I played consistantly was the puzzle fighter from MK: Deception, so I guess I would like the Super Puzzle Fighter games, but I have never actually played them. The concept is a bit similar in some ways, it involves bombs and such.

Well you've already seen the preview for Diamond: Revolution, so I wont go into detail about it, but its a puzzle game I originally made a few years ago. Diamond: Revolution is the 5th & 99.9% chances are the last of the series. Personally, until Diamond: Revolution is released, you can check out Diamond 4, I wouldnt play any of the series that are any lower then that though, the rest are old & buggy.

ya, I saw your preview after I finished the main engine, so I figured I'd try it, but then I started working on mine again. I'll try it after I finish mine though.

I think Puzzle Games are mostly about thinking of a good concept (and I got lots and lots of those). Programming shouldn't be that hard. I made the engine for Mathematicus in 1 hour
