I have an analog synthesiser in my room, made in 1986ish I think. Today I went out and bought some cables for it, and did some recording. (Great way to waste a day)

This is the result of messing around and learning Cubase SX 2 (I'm used to SX 1):

It's all the synthesiser, hence the 80s sound, except it doesnt do any decent drums, so I had to use some crappy crappy MIDI drums.

What do you think? Structurally it isn't very interesting because I was making it up as I went along, but that thing can make some nice sounds. Its a bit random cos I was just messing around

ivan, it was good but not that good.

Tiger; I'm not sure about Cubase SX 2, but most programs have a sample option called Quantize. Try to quantize the bass in the beginning of the song. Now it's quite random and it is hard to tell how the rythm goes. In matter of fact, try quantize the most of the recordings you do from the synth. It's often quite hard to get it right and you can easily tell when a you've not used the quantizer.

I'm not saying that this song was crap. I'm just giving you some advices that might help you while progressing composing music. You're new to Cubase SX 2, and it is very hard to make great things by the first time you try a program. So give it a little time - and keep composing. I'm sure that the next songs will sound awesome.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Yeah the bass is a bit out of time, unfortunately you can only quantise midi and not audio. I did several takes of the bass but I just suck, really. You can hear me hit some duff notes too throughout but I couldn't be bothered to fix them.

I had some problems with playback latency being 700ms for a while too, I can't remember if that affected the bass.

Analogue synthesisers rox my sox.
(searches for soundfonts & VST instruments)

This would've been quite fitting on an album in 1983 (anachronism yes I know), it really is a shame that the lack of quantisition lets it down.

Is it actually possible to quantise audio in any programs? It doesn't sound like its possible, because it means moving arbitrary sections of audio backwards and forwards which would introduce all kinds of problems.

I was playing to a metronome click, but I think it's easier to keep time if I just stick on a temporary midi drum kit and play along to that. In future I'll do that...

I know in Cubase VST (before SX) you had M-points which matched audio with the beat. It might be different in SX.

Yes. It should be possible to quantize audio / wave.
