Well it was released at a computer event in Tokyo. Tell us what you think:
http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000577059060/
http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000077059062/

It's quite similar to what I thought it would look like, however now that I see it it looks like it could be quite hard to control.

To me it seems to make alot easier, like aiming in FPS-games.

And how could you ever have had anything similar in mind?!

Oh don't worry about it, it's typical Nintendo. People who're like this really should be shot, I don't know why the Lord allows them to exist.

People who are driven more by the desire to be different, artistic or unique than any form of common sense or consideration for others. It was the downfall of the N64 (cartridges), the downfall of WindWaker ('Hey Arnold' spring to mind?), and will doubtless be the downfall of the Revolution.

I love the Zelda series, which is why I'm getting a cube when it comes out, but Nintendo themselves have been a steaming pile for years. They've lost all direction in their attempts to be unique and stopped actually giving users what they want. The concept that the designer knows better than the consumer exists in just two places - Nintendo's nerdery of rabies-infected designers, and the beggars of Whitehawk.

The latter don't have jobs (and for very good reason), and the former really really shouldn't.

I firmly believe Nintendo is Japanese for 'What the Hell were we Thinking?"

At first glace it looks to me like one of those Atari controllers, The gamecube controller was quite good to play with but I still prefer the Playstation 1/2 controllers.

"still better than the PS1 and 2 controllers

because you're a Nintedno fanboy?

I think it looks a bit... meh. It could be a hit, but it'll all depend on the games and how they utilise this novelty. I can't imagine holding it for long periods of time will be very comfortable either. I guess I'll delay judgement until we can see it in action -- not that I'm planning on getting a Revolution anyway.

By the way, Liquixcat, "who're" is an acceptable contraction.

I really hope the controler works well. It looks simple, which is a nice deviation from the GC controller (everywhere you looked, there was a different button). But it's definitely bad for business, just like Windwaker was bad for business. It may be the best game/controller in the world, but if people look at it and think 'eww', then they will never try it, and hence never discover just how cool it really was.

Nintendo fanboys tend to say stuff like "well that's their loss", which is true... but it's also Nintendo's loss when they find their games aren't selling so well, and the fanboys' loss because Nintendo have less money to spend on new stuff.

This stuff so annoys me. Nintendo have invented many great things - I believe they pioneered the use of the D-pad, the joystick on a controler, shoulder buttons, the underside button (the 'Z-trigger'), virtually everything we see routinely in gaming. But nothing about this controller looks set to revolutionise gaming as we know it.

In my opinion they'd have been better off using something like the X-box's dual joystick system. That was a great feature!

It looks amazing, completely the opposite of what I was expecting, everyone assumed it would be a two-handed device. I like the idea of the add-ons like the analogue stick, that would be really good for FPS games, but also the pointing at the screen could be interesting for RTS games. This reminds me of the one-handed PS1 pad which came out around 1998 called the ASCII Grip.

The video really shows what it can do. You could basically slash the controller around like a sword to attack enemies. Or use the joystick to move and the controller to shoot in FPS games. It's also PERFECT for another WarioWare game

There is only 1 minor thing that bugs me though: How are you supposed to play 2D platformers on that thing? The controls don't look too comfortable for that, and I can't come up with a way to use the 3D move around thing to play them.

I was kind of suprised when I first saw it, I was honestly expecting something like those fake ones that were totally blank and had customizeable touch areas. But this, I'm sure, will turn out to be just as good as I would expect from Nintendo. I remember everyone went 'eww' at the GCN controller at first, but it turned out to be the most ergonomic of the lot. I think this one will do what they've designed it to do: attract people put off by complex console controllers.
Wresting with an Xbox controller is like trying to get a headjob from a gorgon. I think even my folks would play something with input as familiar as a TV remote.

I guess if you flipped the controller around, so it was held horizontally you could play the 2D games pretty easy like that.

At first i was like "uhoh what have nintendo done", now that ive read what it can do, read the demos that were displayed utilizing it and seen the video, it has the potential to be great.

ZeroTau[FA] - I was actually thinking it would be in two wireless parts, both with trigger grips, sort of like holding two lightguns. I wish some of these new gen controllers had featured force-feedback , it's something I was expecting from the Rev controller.

When I first saw this controller, I was like, 'What the hell?'. But then I gave it more thought, and I thought of the possibilities, especially that you could 'aim' with your controller by just swinging around the controller. Also, this 'aiming with yer controller' works in 3D (towards the screen and stuff).
Shooters will work VERY well on this. The accuracy of your shooting now really depends on you You can't say it's the buggy controls anymore
Hmmm... I bet there's going to come a new WarioWare game on this system. Ooh, I wonder what kind of crazy minigames we're going to see...

I'm really enthusiastic about this thing. Now that I've seen the controller, I just have to get me a Revolution.

I liked that one part on the video where the positioning acted like a torch. Oh, and the swordfighting. Kind of like the arcade game Tsurugi. I'm not going to be able to play Zelda on the Rev without a box of tissues.

Edit:
JP: If the attachments were also wireless, then they'd need their own battery. While it's likely the controllers will be rechargeable, a rechargeable battery for the attachments would push up the price (and they're hoping specialised ones will be cheap enough to include in games) and third-party ones wouldn't bother--so you'd go through a lot of AAs.

I personaly think nintenod are the best of the bunch, sadly sega died the same death that nintendo are heading towards, they come up with Great ideas, fantastic games, and try to revolutionise the gaming world but its companies like SONY! and MICROSOFT that drag them down, they release as much crap as possible, as quickly as possible and dont give a rats arse about the future of the idustry all the care about is lining there ever deepening pockets with the cash from titles made by shitty sell out companies like EA. Nintendo and sega have always and will always be best and with respect to everyone here, people who think sony and microsoft are good companies should be pinned out in the sun and left to decompose.

Games and charcters like Mario, Zelda, Sonic and all other characters that reprosent these companies are fantastic, even square are moving back to nintendo (not entirely). Square Enix is another example of the money grabbing sony, Spin offs from Final fantasy games!!!! what is that about. its sad to see it happen but its the way its gonna be, soon we will all be sitting in front of some Over priced Sony product playing the 12th sequel to a game made by EA and we wont be able to do a damn thing about it!

Is a remake a spin off?
im talking about 10.2!
a remake is because the game is soo great that people want it again, a spin off is when they finish making somthing and think "hey we could make alot of money by using the Final fantasy name a make a really shit game thats nothing like any of the others and pass it off as an add on, then people with small brains and too much money to waste will throw there wads of hard earned cash into the never ending pit next to sony chairmans desk!"

ps.i would pass a heavy load into my undergarments if they released a remake of 7!

X_Sheep: I confess - I just found the video at Gamespot and watched it. None of the write-ups i've read had mentioned any of that stuff, LOL!

I'm a lot less disapointed with the controller now. I think it may well have what it takes to be a success.

The fundamental problem that designers are having with games consoles these days is they're too powerfully focussed on existing genres. This has the potential to create entirely new ones, or totally revamp existing ones - just as the X-Box controller's dual-joystick system redefined console FPS games.

One thing I'm worried about are the AB ab buttons. There's uppercase and lowercase, and I seriously hope they do the same thing (so pressing 'A' and pressing 'a' do the same action). I can't see how you could reach those lowercase buttons otherwise. The principle of two-handed controlers always enabled you to do button combos (like up+b), but this won't be so possible in Revolution.

That said, I can imagine the d-pad will be made almost redundant by the joystick and pointer features.

The lowercase a and b buttons are actually X and Y buttons, as shown in the final part of the movie. When you rotate the controller 90 degrees to get a NES controller, you can use the X and Y buttons as A and B.

I'm after one of those. i dont know about everyone here but dont you feel like pissing on Sony for rehashing the same old controller but now in boomerang form? at least the Xbox added 1 more button.

oh well. sword fighting in Zelda, virtual Samus arm/gun thing in metroid. those 2 reasons alone is why im getting the Rev. and because its possibly the most beautiful console ever invented.

if its worth noting every Nintendo system in the UK has come out at around £100-130. there will be no change with this one. for those asking about the price. it won't cost much. whats certain is it will be cheaper than anything Sony spew out. the PStwo costs £100 with a game fucking ridiculous if you ask me. no thanks!

Antworx(last page): Nintendo isn't going to die anytime soon. Unlike Sega, they have a rock-solid userbase in Japan that could see them through any risky decisions, which is why they're able to do things like this rather than repeatedly cloning designs like the other two.
Not that the MS and Sony don't have plenty of their own resources, but Nintendo doesn't have to cope with selling at a loss to stay competetive.

yea Nintendo can sell the GC at £60 over here and they're still making a profit. infact they make more money than Sony and Microsoft on their game systems. especially when you combine the profits from the GBA and DS, its an insane figure. especially with their first party sales. Amazing too how Sony charge more than Nintendo for pretty much everything too, yet their profits are behind. Xbox make all their money from Xbox Live - we're lead to believe as each console sells at a loss.

if any gaming company go away it would be because of money, after all Nintendo is just a business like any other. sale numbers and whatever mean little compared to profit.

just to all the nay sayers that Nintendo will be dead or whatever in the next few years; just ask yourself which company are making the most profits

Well, Sony doesn't sell the consoles at a loss because they have a massive manufacturing infrastructure and do everything in-house. I'm pretty sure they break even. But they do spend a metric shitload on marketing, and that's where their loss is. Their royalties however are through the roof. They do make a whole lot more than the other two, probably even combined, but not at the same ratio Nintendo does. Nintendo only really stays ahead by opting for innovation over cutting-edge technologies with a high relative cost (because they're new: scale back a bit like N does and you can have almost as much power for greatly reduced cost).
Microsoft has the worst of both worlds. They use third-party parts like Nintendo, run a massive marketing campaign like Sony, and I'm pretty sure don't see any profit at all.

Yeah Nintendo announced there would be a Shell for the controller, the picture AA posted is just a mock-up by IGN of what it'd possibly look like, but a Shell will be an add-on for the more original style of playing but you will still have the features of tilt sensing, pointing etc.

This is gonna be great, at first i was very skeptical. then the Demo's i read about, the comments from people who had Hands-on with it such as developers and the movie convinced me, the idea of having a Shell i think saved nintendos asses, so now people cant really complain about it being a remote when you can play it normally, also theres bacwards compaitability with the GCN controllers on the REV.
FPS's would kick so much more ass on the REV, and theres also possibilities of having RTS's on the REV with its pointing features.

I'll be definatly getting a REV at launch, can't wait

yo, i personally think revolution is going to kick ass! although i think that the n64 and the game cube were, revolution is just plain amazing, even better if they decide to make that gc shell addon or something similar to that mock up, and the controller rotating 90 degrees for a 2 handed controller is cool too

when i first saw it, i was like wtf, i don't wanna hold a remote all the freaking time, and then i saw the second set of a and b buttons, then it was all well and good

Only one question left now:

Does it come in black?

from what i've seen thus far it comes in white, silver (or platinum, nintendo ), green, red, blue (i think) and black. not to forget the multitude of Mario anniversary, Tribal, NES tribute machines.

think i'll stick with white.

one of the demos at the show was Metroid Prime 2 with the Rev controller. players said it was brilliant. so Prime 3 is gonna be pretty smart

dunno if its already been said but imagine using that for Lightsaber games. it pretty much emulates the lightsabers hilt but with a weightless beam/light/burny bit. which will just be awesome
Racing games; turn it on its side and just use as a mini F1 racing wheel.
FPS/FPA. nuff said.
Boxing; as real as its gonna get without some kind of matrix-y immersion.

some genres are going to have to change on the Rev or just use the GC shell controller. but the games on this are going to be outstanding, after the initial and almost obligatory gimmick games.

Jimmi, it wouldnt be able to tell where the controller was in 3D, it only feels wether you're swinging it left, right, up and down. Microsoft is the only one developing what you're talking about, and even then it needs to have two cameras from different angles.

as part of the Rev system, a bar is placed under, below or near your TV. you then calibrate it. that detects how far the controller is to the screen. the gyroscopes deal with which way its been rotated, or pointed.
hence the gunner in the Rev teaser vid. gyroscopes alone couldn't predict where it was pointing on screen.

unless I'm missing something then its 3D.

It is in 3d. It can detect up, down, left, right, forward, back, tilt left and tilt right (and maybe more tilting). The trailer shows someone playing baseball with the controller.

uhm... JP... up/down = one dimension right? then add left/right. that's two dimensions. And then it could detect how far away you are too... that is the depth... forward/backwards. three dimensions!

It cant tell how far in physical space you are. You could be standing on a ladder and playing baseball and the bat wont be an extra 6' high. you could be standing 10' to the left of your tv, but your lightsaber will be swinging in the same spot. So yes, you are missing something. Microsoft is the only one exploring true physical 3D interactivity.

well... yes it would? the game starts off and your cursor (say its an RTS/God game) is slap bang close to the screen dead in the middle. pointing it up would move the cursor up. down, it would go down. move it closer and it would go further into the level/field. move it sideways and the cursor goes sideways. isn't that fully 3D? with the bar and other detection bits n bobs that tells the Rev that the controller is a certain distance from the TV, or that you're to the left or right of it.

same for the sword. Links position would be controller by the little analogue controller, but the gyroscope controller would be his hand. you could thrust the sword forward, swing it around in any direction and using what we've been told about the Rev's controller; would be completely translated onto the screen as if you were Link yourself.

sorry JD, i just can't see what you're on about. any examples of what you mean? and what about the Xbox360; they don't have gyroscopes or sensors do they? I thought they were just regular Xbox controllers but with a Live button?

I've heard about this before, but also heard that its not being used on the Xbox360. that it really is just for hi-tech home use. as if you'd see yuppies using that though... unless it was dolled up. sorry but it screams of the old Orange home.
Although it does have the same sort of functionality as the Rev controller.

Ps. all 3D needs is the ability to detect how far towards the screen it is, how far to the left/right it is and which way the gyro's are pointed. the Rev has all that.

No, it fucking doesn’t, it mimics it to the furthest possible extent that it can, its like playing with a Playstation Eye Toy, the PS guesses what all your flailing means. Did you watch the tech demo? That's what they would need to have a 3D remote, two visual contacts from different angles. That’s why pedometers count footfalls and odometers count revolutions of the wheel, it can’t get distance based on direction. It isn’t accurate. Get it through your damn head that it isn’t a true 3D remote.

Edit: Same sort of functionality? It has MORE functionality, and you saw they needed two infrared lights on each side, and two cameras to pick up the lights, because thats the only way you can figure out the xyz location. and even then the tracking was shifty.

oh yes it could.
from the website Dimension Engineering you just pointed us to:

"(...) or they could be dynamic - caused by moving or vibrating the accelerometer."

"By sensing the amount of dynamic acceleration, you can analyze the way the device is moving."

"Number of axis - For most projects, two is enough. However, if you want to attempt 3d positioning, you will need a 3 axis accelerometer, or two 2 axis ones mounted at right angles."

so you still say an accelerometer couldn't do it?

ONE couldnt do it, three with a compass could, and there would still be the problem of drifting, and you'd have to have a starting postition / calibrate it every time.

Anyway it's besides the point, because they arent using accelerators. They are using this: http://www.gyration.com/us/tech/technology.htm

Alone, that is not enough to provide complete motion tracking, theres a difference between motion sensing and tracking. As you can see in the microsoft tech demo, there was a graphical representation of the remote in his hand, the revolution is not sophisticated enough to be able to draw that in the correct position.

"three with a compass could"
no, one would be enough ("if you want to attempt 3d positioning, you will need a 3 axis accelerometer")
"and you'd have to have a starting postition"
the thing is you'd not need to calibrate it every time, as the accelerometer is not depending on anything other than itself.
but as you said, it doesn't matter.

I'm sorry but I still don't see the difference between the xbox controller and the revolution controller.
"That's what they would need to have a 3D remote, two visual contacts from different angles."
The visual contact for the revolution controller is simply to send data isn't it? The gyroscope does the calculations on its own. "(...) gyroscope that is fully self-contained for easy integration into human input devices such as computer mice or remote controls." is quoted from the page to pointed us to. I might be wrong about this, but there is no reason to think that you need two "contacts" to be able to create real 3D monitoring as there is other ways to implement such things. The GPS (Global Positioning System) needs three satelites to be able to define a location. Why wouldn't the xbox controller need three "contacts" too? this may be above me though, as I'm not fully understanding how trilateration works.

"Could the XWand be Microsoft’s answer to the Nintendo Revolution controller? Not likely. According to this report, the XWand isn’t being designed for gaming apps, unless you consider adjusting the brightness level of your household lamp a game."

with all the patents with Nintendo + Gyroscopics + Game systems i doubt it could legally be used. plus the reports are saying no too.

did you see any of the Rev controller demos? i dunno about you but the reviews went ape over the level of control and how it was 3D. i dunno what the documents are saying but the reviewers are saying its 3D so it must feel that way.

also im still a bit lost to what you mean... surely there is no need for accelerator-detector things when the Rev can detect the distance the controller is to the system. maybe i just cant see it, but detecting its angle and where it is is all you need for 3D.

this may clear things up http://cube.ign.com/articles/651/651275p1.html at least from a players point of view

and finally its common knowledge that we don't know everything about the Rev controller. as far as motion is concerned its got gyroscopes and can detect where it is in relation to the TV/Rev/Wherever you put the 'bar'.
