I myself have no problem if sprites are ripped or modified, as long as they look good and fit in well then its fine with me.
I don't think it looks too close to the original, looking good! may i ask what game its for?
he did modify the original. he hasn't changed the arms or feet AT ALL. except for the colour. if you delete the entire body and draw the rest from there it will be passable.
Minotauro: Yeah, it's just a copy of the Link sprite with a lot of modifications. The head has the biggest mods to it, but the back was re-done, I gave her a bit more of a skirt than Link has (although this is seen more on the animated versions, when she's jumping), and of course she has a bit of boobage where there was none before, lol.
But other than that, yeah, the feet, arms and most of the shadow are the same, lol.
I don't really know what it's for yet, but it's a dream to animate with. I miss all the days I spent making Zelda fangames, lol - I'd forgotten how easy it was to modify and animate the Zelda sprites!
If I can find a free GIF-animator then I'll port the animations into a gif file and post them up. I'm kinda proud of them, cos at least the animations are all my own work

Yeah. And as long as you don't claim it's entirely your own work and then act like a spoiled bitch when you get called on it, nobody really minds. Tracing certainly beats ripping if you can't work from scratch.
