Seeing combat 'at least once' isn't the same as spending 'the majority of their career in immediate mortal peril'.
"Surely the guys that get their arses handed to them daily by US troops are greater heroes."
Why not? I didn't imply otherwise.
You don't see a problem with the idea that heroes can be heroes if they kill other heroes regularly?

Saving lives not destroying them defines a hero for me.

Radix: not really. "Hero" is deictic; one man's hero is another man's terrorist. If I say UK soldiers are heroes and some Iraqi says the insurgent rebels are heroes, then in no-one's eyes do we have heroes killing heroes, simply heroes killing aggressors.
It's an interesting question actually about how long soldiers spend in a warzone. And even if they're not "at war", for instance peacekeeping, I'd suggest that they'd be a target and therefore in peril. The heroism in my eyes is really that they are willing to be put in danger at any time rather than necessarily being at war the whole time. And the potential for that to happen exists and you certainly don't get it in other occupations, which was my initial point.

Case in point: The Doolittle Raiders.
These 80 men struck back at Japan when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. They were to launch off a tiny barge (which didn't have enough room to get the planes off the ground). They beat the odds, and almost all the ships left the barge. They bombed Japan (they deserved it!). But they didn't have enough gas to get back, and so they bailed out, landing in the freezing ocean.
1. Several of them drowned in the waters
2. Some were kidnapped by the Japanese, put on an unfair trial, beaten, and left in a stinking cell. Most of them died. Four came back.
3. Some were captured by the Germans and put in some of the most infamous death camps.
4. Some escaped with some rebel Chinese people (not a joke).
And now there's only 11 out of 80 alive.
They crippled Japan, risking their lives for your ungreatful asses.
Fine Garbage since 2003.

And what would be your definition of hero, exactly?
Most likely it's some who saves the planet or something gay like that.

Allow me to quote Michael Moore for you Noodle. Maybe it's more applicable to the USA but I'd still say it's resonant of the truth:
"I've always been amazed that the very people forced to live in the worst parts of town, go to the worst schools, and who have it the hardest are always the first to step up, to defend us. They serve so that we don't have to. They offer to give up their lives so that we can be free. It is remarkably their gift to us."

Noodle. You are a fucktard.
I never said I was my 'only friend'.
The idea that Global Warming is caused by us is a farce, not Global Warming itself. I should've made my meaning plainer.
You fucking twit.

You're doing what the media does: taking direct quotes and then altering them so that they support your opinion.
A two-bit mind? That was uncalled for.

Yeah, you may be the Best Person Evar, but I wouldn't ask for a custom rating because the admins would have fun with it, and therefor I'm cooler.
Aw, screw it. Let's just agree to disagree.
