So by now we've all seen 1UP's "101 Best Free PC Games" list, right? (They actually have two!) And that list contains awesome games, however, it's really not ALL of the best that the internet can provide, is it? No. So here is where we list the best free PC games (legal, please; "lol ROMZ" does not count), klik or otherwise.
Here's a few of mine.
MIND ARMS - http://tryefstudio.hp.infoseek.co.jp/
I don't know why... I just have lots of fun with this game. It's a fighting game, although it's incomplete (it's at v0.6b right now, and the main site hasn't been updated since January 27, 2006, so it may never be complete). Excellent hand-drawn graphics and rather amusing dialogue make this game a keeper.
BLUE WISH RESURRECTION - http://www004.upp.so-net.ne.jp/x_xgameroom/works.html
A decent vertical shoot-'em-up (I refuse to call it a *****), and it's all in English (although the read-me isn't) for whatever odd reason. I have yet to find the difference between the three different modes, Heaven, Original and Hell, but I'm sure there is one.
^ That's the spirit about the Forbidden Word - we'll get it eradicated yet!
To get in with it first -
CAVE STORY - (Just Google it)
A combination between how games used to be and how they should be like. Don't hate it because it's popular - it's fantastic.
SPUD'S QUEST
I think this game is really part of why I'm proud to be part of this community, for much the same reasons as I mentioned above. The independent game making communities are now producing stuff that I find much more engaging than most commercial releases now. Gush, gush. What an awful word, come to think of it.
Oh yeah, forgot about Cave Story. That's a fantastic game.
I downloaded Spud's Quest; I'm severely stuck in it, however. At least, I think I am. I should go check.
Just Cave Story here. Was pleased as hell they made a Mac port so I could get my pixel fix on the train. I'm a huge fan of ingame music, I replayed Crystal Towers a bloody lot purely for the memorable soundtrack. CS just had perfect music. Very good game.
I did like Knytt too. There's only 1 or 2 Klik games that I play over again and this was one of them, could have been that I played the game direct from the compressed file so my savegame was lost... boo hoo like.
Even wrote a GlovePie script so I could use my 360 wired controller, sat back with the Alya speakers up loud playing on the 24" monitor. Best game I've played with a 360 controller! Works better big and loud, despite the cozy and quaint game it is.
