Yesterday my Win XP updated itself and after a while it told me „Windows has to reboot itself- Reboot now / Reboot Later“.
I’ve said reboot later because I was downloading something and went to bed. When I woke up this morning I saw that XP just rebooted itself and my download was cancelled.
Is there any way that makes it impossible for XP to reboot itself? I thought after it had already asked me the first time it would leave me alone and wait until I reboot it and not force a reboot on me.
Funny how things happen... I was JUST thinking about this this morning. I'd wondered if anyone had lost work because of the dumb "feature". Somebody needs to write Microsoft about this. >_O
I forgot what I did but it's disabled here. What you can alternatively do is open the run dialog, and type "Shutdown -a", but not hit enter yet. Click "Reboot now", then QUICKLY press the Run button. That aborts the shutdown and then convinces the update that it has rebooted.
when XP brings up the countdown timer saying "Windows XP will shut down in 00:02:00", simply going into your date/time box, and set the date to be something like october 11th, 1978. Your computer will now reboot in slightly over 30 years! Yes, you can seriously do that.
I woke up this morning after having some important stuff opened last night, only to find out that my computer was sitting at an empty desktop. I wouldn't have thought it was an update if there wasn't a bubble notice at the bottom saying Updates Installed Successfully. And this is the second time it's happened to me in the past 2 weeks.
Fortunately I saved, and honestly... I'd prefer it do it at night because it's better then being annoyed when you're busy doing something. Just save often and try not to make it a habit to keep your PC on during the night, much less with unsaved stuff open.
im really surprised but also kind of happy to see how many people are frustrated by this- YES it is annoying and you think so as well.

That is a garbage method. Just type "shutdown -a" into the run dialog and press OK.

That's like saying "Stop driving a car and instead just take a shit in the highway and declare yourself at your destination."
I'm using Vista and sometimes it will calmy shut down all programs and restart while I'm using it with NO warning at all. Does anyone else have this problem? It happens quite rarely but still annoying, or course.

im on vista and have never had that problem, maybe somethings wrong with ur PC, i used to have a virus like that a while back, but it didnt shutdown the computer, it just closed applications randomly.
pixelthiefs 30 years thing was how i used to use the games factory's trial for about ten years without it running out, sadly newer trials have built in features against this, which sucks

I remember having an issue similar to this a few years ago. It might possibly be a soft shutdown if something like hardware is consistently not supplied sufficient power. Or it could even easier be virus or spyware related. Exhaust all your options though, it's defiantly not Vista unless your computer is having a hard time handling it or it was installed incorrectly.
