A couple of days ago, my computer was refusing to open any programs. I've got it working by disabling some services and stuff, but now I can't access the internet. Does anyone know which process or service controls internt access?

I'm using Windows XP SP1. (I'd be using SP2, but it won't install.) If this is somewhere in the help files, I can't find it. Any help would be appreciatd.

Arbitrarily disabling services is a dangerous practice, you should really only do it when you know which ones you don't want. Make sure the DNS Client is on, and then try turning on the ICS and ICF services if they are off. If it's still a no-go, try system restore and then disable the services one by one.

Usually reformatting is a last resort, but it sounds like your computer is already pretty boogered up if it can't open programs, so that's an option.

I know I shouldn't disable services like that, but I've been trying everything. I even tried a system restore, but I might go a little further back.

Unfortunately, I've screwed around with it a little more and I've seemed to undo all my progress. I'll figure it out eventually.

I hope so. A lot of people reformat their computers at least once a year, and though I used to not like to do that, sometimes it's necessary.

have you tried virus/adware/malware removal?

if you disabled services you more than likely disabled something releated to your internet modem/broadband/wireless card.

atf-cleaner will clean out all junk from your computer.
ad-aware anniversery, spybots s&d, and malware bytes to remove bad programs viruses trojans malware etc.

hijack this will help you clean out your registry of unnecessary and malicious entries. but its an advanced program, and removing anything with it is a risk if you dont know what you are doing.

if all else fails you are going to need a fresh install.

i recommend fully updating windows as soon as you have internet access after a fresh install. then installing and running all virus/adware/malware protection. then installing only all necessary programs. defrag, system cleanup. install anything left. rinse repeat run virus, defrag, system cleanup.

run atf, virus programs, defrag, system cleanup at least once a week and you should never have any slowdown, viruses, etc. assuming you dont go seek it out by clicking ads, looking at obscure websites, or porn.

Yes, keep lists of anything and everything at all times, I always say. I've used a lot of paper and hard drive space over the years. Well, no, because txt's are small, but you get the picture. X)

Well, after a little antivirus scan (12 unique viruses, I should really scan this thing more ) and finding that darned service, my computer seems to be fixed. (Fixed being a relative term. It's still as crappy as ever, it's just back to what it was like about a week ago. )

Of course, if I couldn't fix it, mom was gonna buy the family a new computer, and I was kinda looking forward to it. Oh well, better to not have to deal with the file transfer stuff.

I wish my mum could buy us a new computer when our old desktop fudges up.

Glad it's working!
