Hey, I finally decided that I'm going to update my ancient TGF1, and I just wanted to ask some help about the differences between the two, and if it was really worth the extra 50 bucks.

Some basic questions I want to ask..

Can tgf2/mmf2 open gam files from tgf1? Could you continue a tgf1 project on the new program?
Does tgf2 save mmf files, and does mmf2 save gam files?

What objects or commands are really important in mmf2 that isn't in tgf2?

And anything else that makes the extra 50 bucks worth paying.

Thanks.

MMF2 has extensions plus alpha channels. Get MMF2.

neither tgf2 or mmf2 save .gam but both can open them. there are still many dependencies though.

tgf2 can also not use third party extensions unless clickteam puts them in or makes them available for tgf2.

mmf2 is by far the superior product if you are serous about upgrading.

Make or breaks for me: TGF2 has huge icons and a splash screen, MMF2 has small eye-pleasing icons, no splash screen, and extensions.

Definitely definitely MMF2. I upgraded from TGF Pro to TGF2 and didn't use it at all for probably two years. (It was released in 06, right? O_o) I got MMF2 a few months ago and switched completely. I'm still fond of the old TGF1 and a few aspects of the interface, but the added functionality and efficiency of MMF2 is just... worth it.

I started out with TGF2. Its stability makes it better than TGF1 IMO. The hugest fault it has is not being able to play .ogg's and no direct show object, so you're basically stuck with midi's or huge .wavs

Once I switched, there were a lot of other benefits. Extensions for example, my favorite being ini++. Others being no splash screen, alpha channel support, event list editor . So TGF2 isn't bad, I made ladders in it, but it's missing some really cool stuff.

Ok, so what I'm getting is...

Alpha channels
Extensions
No Splash Screen
Not limited to midis

Well, that sounds nice and all, but a splash screen isnt such a big deal, I write my music in midi format anyway. What are alpha channels and what are some good extensions that you can put in MMF2 that you would really miss out on? Is there no fastloops, or INI, or string parser or what?

If I can use basically the same extensions you get in TGF1, thats fine since I had too many extension that I never used anyway.

Mainly, I want to make RPG and Adventure style games, and doing it in TGF1 is really a pain in the ass. With the capabilities in TGF2, could you still make a RPG/Adventure?

Because its really hard shelling out 120 bucks, especially if the extras are going to be things I'm not going to use anyway.

The one extension thats saved my life is the Platform Movement Object http://ext.neatwares.ath.cx/ext/Platform_Movement Its really helpful for platformers without having to make a fastloop engine or what ever. But besides that not really any other ones. I've got some out of interest but none have been really helpful to me.

Right, but it doesn't have a description. Like, what's an alpha channel? Whats an event list editor? etc

Alpha channels are a way to make part of an active/object semi-transparent. It's usually used for drop shadows I think. Definitely useful when you're importing shiny stuff from GIMP or photoshop. I don't have TGF2 installed anymore but I remember being disappointed in the amount of built-in extensions. I think you should just buy MMF2 and save yourself the trouble of worrying over which to get and perhaps dealing with upgrading later. It's just better than TGF2 and it's really worth it. And believe me I don't have money flowing out of my... pockets.

There is nothing wrong in asking questions in the forums. It's better to ask someone than to trudge through tons of crap to find some answers.

Not that it matters... TGF is only supposed to be a sliding introduction to the software for people who haven't used it. MMF2 is basically the same exact program except far better, and MMF2 Developer is basically a developer/enthusiast version that gives you a few extra features and royalty rights which break all the chains from your creations and Clickteam.

I'm currently trying to ajust from TGF1 to MMF2, you can definitely transfer your game into MMF 2 as i do all the time. The interface for both TGF2 and MMF2 are the same its just MMF2 has more features. If you can afford to go for MMF 2, alpha channels give you a big advantage when making games. I don't like the drawing tools in the new products so i've been building my game in TGF1 and testing it in MMF2. Should really start using MMF2 full time and retire TGF1.

It's not really helpful. And google doesn't really explain most of the things on it. Heck, I didn't know that TGF2 was missing as many features until I read this thread. No event list editor, really?
