Is there a way to make a heat effect? You know, like that "mirage" effect or maybe the air around the back of a jet engine? That wavy look.
I was thinking maybe the lens object but that might not look right.
Any ideas?

Perspective object, sinewaves. Always add 1 to offset of perspective object. Something like that, very easy to achieve

Thanks Adam, I had downloaded the perspective object yesterday but it turned out to be the MMF1 extension whch didn't work, so I had to get the MMF2 one today and try it out tonight.
While the effect is cool, there are 2 main things that bother me about it and I think might be inherent to the extension's normal display output. The first is that whenever you first enter a frame with the PO going you see these black rectangles that slowly go away. It's like the sinewaves have to go and cover them up first, it's really weird and I can't stop them from appearing when the frame first runs.
The second thing is that when I have a vertical sinewave with an always offset the sinewave by 1 it looks great after those black things go away- until the wave loops back or something. You can see a line where the effect ends or something go upwards after awhile. Wait a little while longer and you'll see it again. It reminds me a lot of how a computer monitor looks on a TV program, where you can see all the little lines going up and down.
These two things make the effect look terrible overall, so I was wondering if I'm doing it right or if there's some setup or work-arounds that are supposed to be used in conjunction with the PO in order to make it look better by not having that visible loop or those black rectangles?

Sometimes that does happen, yes. Ill try and make an example tommorow if you wish. I did manage to do it quite nicely recently You just have to be subtle with it and not OTT.

Alternatively, you could use Sphax's Complex-softwares pixel shaders on a layer (it has a "Sinwave" shader which makes that wavey look. Using the layer object Im pretty sure you could mess around with the parameters to make it move on it's own accord etc.
That however, is if you're willing to use HWA Which I always am Cant live without it
