Poll: How do you feel about Puzzle Games?
I love them. - 4 votes
I like them. - 10 votes
I dislike them. - 0 votes
I hate them. - 0 votes
I despise them with the fiery burning passion of a thousand suns. - 0 votes
Depends on the game. - 8 votes
Other (Give your opinion as a post!) - 2 votes
I can take 'em or leave 'em. - 3 votes

I can't figure out if it's cool to like puzzle games or hate puzzle games.

Are they boring? Take too much brain power when you're trying to relax? Or what?

Tetris and PopCap games seem to be the only things close enough to a universal exception I can think of.

Vote in the poll! And share your reasons, if you'd like!

I love puzzle games They are a great way to pass the time when you don't have time to play a different game.

I got told off not too long ago for suggesting people didn't like puzzle games...

Personally, I do like puzzle games, and there are one or two that I really love.
"Mole Mania" is my favourite (as I tend to point out at every available opportunity).

I think the most common problem with pure abstract puzzle games, is that they tend to get repetitive after a while - just more and more levels of the same thing, and no kind of storyline or anything to keep you interested. That's also why they make such good coffee break games though - you can just pick up and play a quick game, without really having to keep track of anything, and you don't get rusty if you stop playing for a while.

I like puzzle games that aren't obviously puzzle games.
Something like "Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines" looks like a strategy/war game, with its WW2 setting etc, but it actually plays like a puzzle game. There's typically only one right way to complete a mission, and the weapons/characters don't have realistic characteristics, but are designed to be used in a certain way (only the diver character can swim; only the driver can drive a truck; etc).
The same applies to "Incubation" - which on the face of it, is a sci-fi turn-based strategy game, but in reality has very strong puzzle elements.

Also, puzzles as part of a bigger game. I loved all the puzzles in the "Golden Sun" (RPG) games, for example.

Well, I expected to see votes for disliking them by now, so I guess liking them is okay.

I like them. Obviously.

Proffesor Layton, Chu Chu rocket, Zoo Keeper DS, Heart Light and Kororinpa are the only puzzle games I play/played that come to mind. I dont like to be presented with something boring when playing a puzzle game. So many of them are a single screen game, so I like to see original twists to them or a theme of some description.

Having mentioned Proffesor Layton, Ive yet to play the third game. I played the first two, watched the movie, and by that time I was too Proffesor Layton'd out to bother with the new game >.< It just seems like it will be more of the same thing to me...

Edit: Darn it, voted for "I like them" only to find there is now a take them or leave them option

Oh man, Portal was so awesome, I beat it without getting up once. Not that big of a deal, but I don't often do that.

I totally dig puzzle games. I happen to be obsessed with board games as well, and see many similarities. Many mechanics are shared between board games and puzzle video games, and my tendency is to incorporate videogame puzzle aspects into my board game designs. If I was skilled enough in software development, it would most likely also be the other way around: I'd find ways to make more puzzle video games based upon my board game designs.

A fascinating game I feel incorporates puzzle elements with an engrossing theme is Desktop Dungeons, a coffee-break puzzle game disguised as a roguelike. Check it out here:

There are plenty more, I'm sure, but this is the one that comes to mind most definitely.

Meh, mostly lame? Some are ok (Tetris for example) but mostly they are all the same to me especially the ones that run in browsers, and the lame ones with diamonds.

I only like puzzle games that involve physics (such as Armadillo Run and Bridge Builder). Or ones that reward you with XXX.

I like intelligent puzzle games (not for intelligent people, but smartly-designed puzzles). One good example would be Nifflas' WADF game. There's another good one called Limbo for Xbox, although I have only played so little (I don't own the console). There are so many others I have liked. I have also disliked many because of the poorly-thought designs (I must say, from a developer's point of view, it's a hard genre).

I accidently ticked 'I like them' instead of 'It depends on the game'. There are a lot of different puzzle games and different types of puzzle games. Some are cringe-worthy and unoriginal (match-3 games) and some are actually pretty clever and make you think (World of Goo).
