Has anybody ever played a really (I mean real top grade) game and thought to them selves - "Wow, If only they had ...."? Why don't those companies realize that alot of the game's fun comes from flexibility, that's why gta was such a big hit. You can roam around a city and do many things a real theif can be. And has anyone ever played Halo? Anybody think how much fun that would be if they just made a level where they plonked 200 marines and 200 covenant on a huge battleground and you got to fight in it. That would be awsome!

Your thoughts ~

Yo, Andy. You seem to be really into this freedom stuff in games right now, which is totally understandable. But, to give the player such flexibility is to work out every condition that could occur. But when you have other parts of the game as complex, the time you have to make flexibility dies out. But I get what you mean. I guess that's why MMORPGs are so popular...

It's kind of the holy grail of alot of game developers, and gamers alike, to have a game with total freedom.
It's not really a hard thing to do, at least the basics of it. The most basic of the "freedom" style games around would be the original GTA. Yet, that's still a tough undertaking.

I think if your ever going to make one of these player freedom sort of games, you start it off small. I actually had one a while back, which I sadly lost in hardisk crash. Basically, what it was a GTA style top view, coincidently made before GTA ...but the game wasn't based around stealing cars.
What you could do is drive around a small city. The level size was about 3200x3200, not very big, especially when your in a car driving at 100 speed, you get from one side to the other in about 5 seconds.

Anyway, so this little city had houses, of which you could walk it, and could walk around. Some houses had stuff in it. I made these by having you could walk into the house in the main part of the level, and then it moves your player to another part of the frame in the middle of nowhere, basically where all you can see is the inside of the house and everything around is black. Interesting concept, and saved me having to make a REALLY HUGE map if I wanted to actually have the houses on the map.

And there were cops. But not like cops in GTA. They would come after you if you if you broke the speed limit, or ran a red light, or if one saw you run over or punch someone, or shoot your gun in front of them, they'd come after you. By car or foot. And they would run after you and give you a fine, depending on the offense. If they caught you shooting someone then they'd try to shoot you!

One more thing was that the game had no real point. You could talk to people in shops and they would tell you stuff, but you never really had any missions. There were a few little hidden things, like a evil crazy dog that was guarding an M16 in its backyard, and a guy who would start blasting you if you walked into his house. But basically the game had no real point besides... kill people, get money, buy bigger weapons, blow up stuff...that was basically it. I guess I never got around to adding purpose.

Isn't that what makes it fun . No point to it means you can do whatever you want.

Have you ever played a racing game with traffic and thought - 'Stuff this i'm gonna drive backwards on the freeway as fast as i can and dodge cars'? I've done that in one game (Italian Job on Xbox) but most other games i get a "WRONG WAY" sign :/.

I am currently making a freedom sort of game with another clicker which our main aim is to make it as customizable and as fun as possible.
