Well, I was wondering how to to make the best out of the graphincs for my game, made in TGF. Playing in a window doesn't look too nice and neither with the black border. The stretch out thing is just silly. There some kind of resolution extension but I have no clue how too use it, should i change to 640x480 800x600 or what? I hope someone understands what my problem is...
640x480 for old skool feel
800x600 for nice unpixeled smoothness
1024x768 if you use huge sprites
use the display extension in TGF or in MMF its build in in frame properties
A monitor is way different then a television
So i was talking about the effect it gives to the eye on a computer, it doesnt give a crap what resolution numbers it is.
jay white, fleshy is right about this one. Not to start a flame war or go off topic, but resolutions are experienced differently on a tv and monitor (crt/tft). 640*480 or something like that is what concoles use simply because tv sets cannot show anything higher. I know most pc graphic cards support up to 1024*768 on a tv however that will not make a better picture on the tv, almost opposite.
The reason is a tv is not created to run at high resolutions. A PAL/SECAM system uses what corresponds to a resolution of 720*576 and NTSC a resolution of 720*480. However as these resolutions are not very high (but the tv systems are also very old) other tricks are used to make it look better, therefore the tv use what we could call interpolation. That means that every "pixel"/point "bleeds" a bit into its neighbour "pixels"/points making the colors bland a bit which smoothes the whole look of the picture on the cost of sharpness.
So, a game in 640*480 on a tv screen will look pretty good and smooth while it will look jagged on a monitor (eg you will clearly be able to see the individual pixels on a round edge).
Really old games use a resolution of 320*240, however I would still say its within reason to say some old school games use a resolution of 640*480 (on a pc that is) because they are up to 10 years old.
