I am cheap and haven't upgraded my computer substansially in years:

1.3GHz Duron
512mb RAM
40GB hard drive
Very average video card with some acceleration of some kind
Rubbish DVD drive which doesn't read DVDs off magazine covers, or recorded ones
CDRW drive which does actually work
Wireless network at whatever the normal speed last year was
Onboard Creative sound
4 USB ports
Various other ports I hardly ever use
A TRACKBALL!!!
which plugs into a USB keyboard
and a 17" flatscreen CRT

I need to upgrade my motherboard, some of that Dance Dance Revolution memory will really speed up my computer...

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ processor, overclocked slightly
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro GFX Card, also oveclocked quite a bit
512Mb DDR RAM
A nice 120gb Hard Drive and a crapper 20gb Hare Drive
16x DVD-ROM drive and 52x24x52 CD-Writer
4 Firewire ports and 8 USB 2.0
Onboard sound, which is actually pretty decent, it has EAX equivelent
2 powerful fans to stop the thing combusting and also a massive heatsink for my GFX Card

I don't really care about the details, I just know I haven't come across a game yet which I can't run in full detail and high res. Even Far Cry and UT2004, makes me a very happy camper. I'm sure Doom 3's gonna give me some shit though.

p4 3ghz with hyperthreading.
512mb ram ddr or something
geforce fx 5600 256mb vram
150 gb hard drive
dvd rw drive
19 inch monitor (because they had ran out of flat screens)

all for a reasonable £850.

now you would think this is kick arse but its not as good with games as id assume.

Andyuk: Actually, I wouldn't assume that would be great for games. Not enough RAM, and your video card can run all the newest games(because it has lots of memory), but definately not on max details, since it's way too slow.

Fast intel processor though. Good for running applications.

i can run far cry on full mostly.

its weird because outside (level 1) its almost 60fps but when on that tanker thingy (level 2) certain rooms slow to about 5fps, mabye its the lighting or shadow effects that my graphics card can't handle properly, its the same on low too.

apparently the geforce fx 5600 with 256mb is dead slow compared to the 128mb versions. oh well its too late now.

Windows 2000.

600mhz is the fastest processor my motherboard can take, so any upgrades would mean a serious system overhaul. However, this system is absolutely fine for my needs, so there's absolutely no need for me to waste a couple of hundred quid on a new system.

BTW hyperthreading is useless unless both the motherboard and OS support it

not entirely, before i got my Radeon 9600 Pro i used the integrated Intel graphics card. wasn't horrible but it ran most games quite well

depends on the motherboard

Yes, they are.

To run, they require some of your system ram, which is obviously a bad thing, especially if you use a program/game that requires a lot of memory.

you do not need a 4 GB swapfile when you only have 768mb of ram, christopher. you'll only ever need 1.5-2.5 times the amount of physical ram you have, the rest is just a waste of HD space.

Remember; you may find integrated graphics okay for a time and it does depend on the motheroard but usually only the cheap low-end mobos have on board graphics. Don't forget if you want to upgrade you are forced to buy a whole new mobo

It would be fine if you were just using your pc for office use I guess, but if you are a serious gamer, avoid like the plauge!

It's not really a waste of hd space when you look at what some things I do take up, I had this one 3D thing rendering using over 2 gigs of RAM and I get a noticeable preformance boost with it 4 gigs besides, the most space I've ever used on a hard drive was 40 gigs before I had to re-format it due to a virus/virus scanner
