It's about time I posted this here I think - Minecraft has become an extremely popular game recently (the creator, Notch, got invited to Valve recently - apparently they like to play Minecraft in their offices). I believe Notch just reached 500,000 registered users.

If you haven't played it then give it a try - you do have to buy the current version, but it's cheap and definately worth the money in my opinion. You can try a free version if you can't decide whether you want to buy it or not.

http://www.minecraft.net

I'll leave a couple of videos to explain the game.

The reason I posted this here is because DC resident Hempuli got a mention from Notch on Twitter about a game he made in MMF2 - which I thought was pretty impressive

I still haven't bought it yet but I will when I have $13 to spend. I just bought Starcraft 2 and being I'm still not allowed to go back to work because of my broken wrist, I have to be real careful with my money. Looks like Minecraft has come a very long way from back when me and my friends all just went in and did random sculptures. That was long before any real game-play was added. It's pretty exciting to see how far it's come. Thanks.

Inside my base (notice the stairway to the escape hatch):

A few chests behind the stairs (left= blocks; middle= food; right= tool/armor):

Look to the right and there's a small hallway with a staircase down to my mine:

I have quite a few door leading to different caves underground:

My lowest mineshaft is the most complete one. It has mine tracks (in progress) and a ton of torches. This is where i found four depots of diamond!

Did you do all that by hand? That's insane!

It looks interesting but wouldn't hold my interest when I tried it, unfortunately. Perhaps I ought to give it another go.

yeah I did all of it by hand. Each world is randomly generated so it's loads of fun. You also have to survive by making shelters, finding food, and not dying from monsters at night. I've wasted so many hours as you can tell from the man made structures. Cant stop playing it. It's so fun

It gets boring when you play the free version, since all you can do is build. There's no survival which is the fun part

I've been reading tons about this game lately and it looks absolutely absorbing! The only reason i've not bought this is i don't have the time to freely spend on it, and i want to make sure i keep my job by coming into work on time every day!

I hear the maker is doing very well for himself since it took off - hats off to him!

I was the same until I found out how to actually craft stuff. The idea is that you need to find materials straight away so that you can build a small shelter to survive the first night, then you can build on from there and eventually get to the stage where you have a huge base with mob traps and contraptions. It's a weirdly simple yet complex game in so many ways.

The best thing is that Notch is regularly updating - he usually updates a few times a week, and always releases a "surprise" update on Friday (which basically adds features which we have to find for ourselves). For example, this week he added a compass item which lets you find your way back to the re-spawn area.

ive been hearing a lot about minecraft recently. from random places on the internet, to mainstream gaming podcasts, and have heard nothing but good things. it sounds like a lot of fun, and has a lot of potential as a full blown commercial game.

one question... iirc it was originally going to have multiplayer support? does it have that yet? if not, is it still expected?

It has free world multiplayer support on the minecraft.net website where people host their own servers. At the moment Notch has an early build of the Alpha multiplayer support (survival one).

I decided to create a new better world than the previous one a few posts up It'll be sweet. Oh and I changed my player's skin to resemble Ezio Auditore from Assassin's Creed

Invalidated for most when you consider how much it would cost to build those things, let alone where you put them and the fact that it doesn't have an entire game attached to it.

Incidentally, there is an actual program made by lego foe building with lego bricks on your computer.

Several, in fact. I believe there's an open-source standard for digital lego bricks. It's been so long since I checked into it that I don't remember what it was though.

It's a shame lego's service for shipping the parts and instructions to make what you created is so expensive.

We have some lego fans on here?

There is lego digital designer, MLCAD and probably some more. Did anyone else find as a kid you NEVER had enough bricks to build what you wanted? No matter what it was too?

Anyway back on topic, I am very tempted to buy this it looks quite fun

I love minecraft! I have built a big base multiple times, however I have never really gotten into building a real mine. I only find pre-existing mines and exploit them. Found lots of redstone in a natural cave. It was really fun to explore it and to dodge lava and mobs to get to the precious resources.

i used to have tins upon tins of legos. cookie tins, popcorn tins, random tins. so many legos! lol.

i also have the computer ones, and i used old legos combined with the computer ones and built awesome stuff.

dont know where most of it is anymore ;__ ;

i bought minecraft, and its awesome. im about to build a base at my spawn point which is at a beach area. a sand castle. then start exploring the ocean for other islands.

i also need to start digging deeper into the lava areas. i havent ventured there yet.

I hear a lot about Minecraft, but heck, if I wanted to build cool stuff, I'd play Dwarf Fortress First person building stuff seems pretty annoying. I'd probably get into it if you could build forts and fight other people

Muz: Notch, the creator of minecraft said it is actually based off DF, just seen in the 1st person and more user friendly. He even talked about making a converting tool so you can view your DF worlds in minecraft.

How do you get multiplayer to work? I tried it on my ip address but it didn't work.

water breaks up the redstone lines But you can encase the lines in glass since you can put glass actually on the lines, unlike most blocks.

The halloween update came out last night. Wow, it is so fun! Make a portal and go to the "nether" (hell) it's pretty awesome. To make a portal, make a frame of obsidian 4 blocks wide and 5 blocks high (14 pieces of obsidian) and then light the middle on fire with flint.

i've been working on digging out a long, dark mineshaft, and it's finally become quite interesting. there are lava flows, obsidian, redstone...and plenty of monsters.

haven't been online with the computer that has minecraft installed, so i don't have the halloween update. but it's plenty thrilling already. looking forward to finally acquiring the most recent version.

...and what's this about a jukebox that plays records?!?! i saw it as a recipe on minepedia, and that's goofy.

Portals seem to be, um, the tinest bit unpredictable.

Plenty of grilled pork down in hell, though!

Okay guys, we know this much: when you create a portal, the exit portal in the nether is probably going to be generated a few blocks away, somewhere 'safe' - i.e., not in a wall, in lava, etc. This is why when you return through that portal, a third is created in the real world, miles away from your original (1:8 blocks), deep underground in an unexplored cave or something.

Pretty simple right? But what if one of your netherside portals is deactivated by a ghast's fireball, making it a void obsidian frame? And then you die in hell, respawning topside, your topside portal now unlinked to a specific exit? It's going to make a new portal in the nether, yet further away due to the mass of obsidian now sitting in the safe area it would have originally corresponded to.

So basically, there's going to be a lot of heartache for anyone with the modest enough ambition of fast travel through hell.

It's still awesome, even if the Halloween update has left the game considerably more broken than it was before.

I'll try to explain it better:

While your in the nether, each block you move is multiplied by 16 blocks in the real world. So if you moved 10 blocks in the nether, it should put you out somewhere 160 blocks away. This is great if you want to travel really far in minecraft. However the portals dont seem to link directly to each other. If you build a portal in your world, then go back in the portal that you just came out of in the nether, you'll end up somewhere else.

And you can reignite the portals in the nether if they ever go out. A good idea is surrounding your portal in the nether with a cobblestone house, since it wont get caught on fire or explode.

You can create a jukebox by placing a border of planks in the craftbox and having one diamond in the middle. Currently there are two records that you can get. One is green and one is yellow. You can either find them in chest that are in dungeons (monster spawners) or if you can get a skeleton to shoot a creeper to death you'll have a chance of getting one.

its pretty much already turning into an mmo. without the first m. its not massive but its sure fun playing multiplayer. i dont doubt that someone will eventually mod a server to have set pieces, quests, buildable areas, etc. the game is pretty much the perfect sandbox mod game.

Well, online or not, I need a solid server to play online smoothly. I was trying to play online with duncan.. and it's very unstable. We need a SUPER SERVER with 1000s of players! the guy already made like 6 millions dollars out of minecraft and ppl keep buying it, he can definitely buy a super server and charge 5 bux a month, he'd regain his money in 3 days!... and then keep getting richer. But no! He's just doing these lil updates whenever he has free time!

Imagine thousands of players on the same land! Single players make awesome huge structures on their own, they spend hours, days on it! Imagine dozens of players building the finest castles of iron and gold! They'd have zombies get inside and close the door so they stay there to guard the halls! I could sell zombies. 5 zombies for 1 gold block! Perfect sale! I'd keep them behind a steel door only I can open, anyone tries anything folly? I pull a lever and all this hot lava will fall on top of everyone's head! they'd respawn so far it'd take them hours to come back! I'd take me a while to refill the lava chambers though... maybe i should have a direct flow from the ground.. hmm interesting. If I make a successful sale I'll force the zombies to get on my coal fueled cart and deliver the zombies by train, zombies shall

Cheers Sumo!

I just run a server off my computer whenever we play.

On Windows, run http://www.minecraft.net/download/Minecraft_Server.exe?v=1299542738246 then open the client up and join your IP address (or localhost). The default port is 25565, so if you use a router make sure you're forwarding that.

It was a bit temperamental when I started playing SMP, but it's a lot stabler these days

also you will need to set the serverip= parameter in the server.settings file to the unique local network ip of that computer.

if the server is on 192.168.1.28 it should be set to that.

forward the port (default port is 25565) to that ip as well and you should be able to connect from anywhere. use the local ip if connecting from within the network and the remote ip from outside.

I got into Minecraft just about a week ago, and now I'm rather obsessed! I have a laptop and the graphics card doesn't do wonders so I have to have the render distance on short most of the time. I have just set up a server but it's not very interesting yet..

that really sucks. perhaps if you turn graphics to fast, opengl on, smooth lighting off, and performance to max fps, you can get your distance to normal.

my town is growing, although not very fast, theres only about 7 or 8 users, and only ever 2-3 on at a time.

right now we have a church, 5 houses, a mine, an almost finished collisseum, and an under construction castle. And not to mention the secret underground passages tunneling around underneath the town .

Anyone at MineCon? I am. A bit disappoint at the show floor, but the panels are what its all about. And so far it has been excellent.

When notch flipped the switch to release the game, I'm not sure what they expected to happen, but i knew. The servers crashed of course, and within minutes no one could log in or download the game. LOL.

All in all it's been good. One more day of panels. Love minecraft, and love the player / modder / and developer community. Really want to get in to some mod and bukkit plugin developing.
